What is a GM in Action workshop?

GM in Action workshops are a service offered by the GenderCompetenceCenter as part of our strategic consultancy services for organisations to support them in implementing an orientation to gender equality in their specialist work.

The goal of GM in Action workshops is to enable participants to apply GM tools such as the Federal Government’s Working Aids in their day-to-day working lives.

What exactly happens in a GM in Action Workshop?

The workshop begins with an introduction to GM and the tool that’s going to be used in the workshop.

Then the tool that’s been presented is applied in working groups to projects of the participants. The results of the working groups are presented and discussed in plenum.

To end, opportunities and challenges for thoroughgoing application in day-to-day work activities are discussed in the context of the results achieved and further steps for future work are planned.

What makes a GM in Action workshop so special?

GM in Action workshops are embedded in our strategic consultancy services and are aimed at supporting the process of implementation in an organisation. They are geared to the policy fields and thus to the specific tasks of an organisation. Their starting point is the day-to-day work routines of staff, including such activities as drawing up reports or awarding a research contract. Thus, existing expert knowledge of staff in the various subject areas of youth or consumer protection is “activated” in a way oriented to gender equality.

Because they are embedded in GM implementation strategies, GM in Action workshops need a lot of intense planning. This includes the strategic placement of the workshop in the organisation (who will take part? What examples will be used?) and the selection of projects to be worked on.

An important feature of a GM in Action workshop is to provide information on the GM strategy, but the primary emphasis is on communicating specific experiences by means of using tools to work on a project in a gender equality oriented way.

GM in Action workshops have training effects, but are not training in the classical sense. Rather, they are a means of implementing GM. By means of a strategic orientation to the respective status of implementation of the strategy of GM, they make a contribution to the modernisation of administration in an organisation.

What does strategic planning of the GM in Action workshop mean?

GM in Action workshops are a means for implementing GM. Their efficiency can be ensured due to their strategic orientation to the process of implementation. This means that they need a lot of intensive planning as part of strategic consultancy services provided by the GenderCompetenceCenter in order to meet the specific requirements of an organisation. So the aspects to take into account in planning should include:
  • Selection of policy fields: possible interlinking, such as project management or co-signing in liaison with other organisations
  • Selection of participants: a “productive” mix in terms of competencies, previous experience and attitude to the strategy of GM
  • Selection of processes according to frequency and importance of processes: e.g. using as examples processes with medium political urgency, if possible without the pressure of deadlines.

The tools that the organisation itself uses are deployed in a GM in Action workshop. One example is the Working Aids for the Federal Government, which currently exist for the legislation, research grants, reporting and public relations policy fields.

What benefit does an institution get from a GM in Action workshop?

Even in the short term a GM in Action workshop has a positive impact.
  • The application of a tool is made easier for staff because they have experience with implementation.
  • A particular contributory factor to this is that they are able to assess the application of a tool in terms of the time it will need and its complexity. These aspects are frequently over-estimated; the positive experience gained in a GM in Action workshop can help to overcome such reservations.
  • Participants can pass on their experience in the organisation. The manner of working on the selected processes in a gender equality-oriented way in the workshop can be communicated as examples to the organisation.
In the long term, staff will be enabled to work in a gender competent and gender equality-oriented way in all aspects of the organisation.

up

Which members of staff of an organisation can benefit most from taking part in a GM in Action workshop?

In principle, all members of staff of an organisation can take part in a GM in Action workshop.
Staff at the specialist work level can get particular benefit from taking part. A GM in Action workshop offers them support in structuring their day-to-day work in a way geared to gender equality.

Participating in a GM in Action workshop can support middle managers specifically in their specialist work, but is also relevant for organisational management tasks.

up

How can it be guaranteed that secret processes don’t get leaked?

Consultancy needs trust. Absolute confidentiality regarding the subject matter of non-public processes and the people involved in them is a guiding principle in the work of the GenderCompetenceCenter. All our staff are therefore subject to a duty of confidentiality.

up

How long will a GM in Action workshop last?

A GM in Action workshop lasts between two and three hours.

The gender equality-oriented structuring of the framework conditions for a GM in Action workshop can affect the starting time and duration. Planning should take account of the fact that the GM in Action workshop should be equally accessible for all, including part-time staff.

up

What does a GM in Action workshop cost?

The work of the GenderCompetenceCenter is free of charge. All that must be provided is the materials and any technical equipment needed for the GM in Action workshop.

For other consultants, normal rates are charged, although the intensive preparatory work has to be taken into account as well.

up

What is the benefit of GM in Action workshops for management staff?

Even in the short term a GM in Action workshop has a positive impact.
  • Internally, management staff can gain acceptance in their own departments with little effort.
  • Externally, management staff can demonstrate their willingness to sustained implementation of the strategy of GM and thus ensure “good marks” for their departments in terms of gender equality policy.
In the long term, too, positive effects can be achieved.
  • Internally, staff will be enabled to work in a thoroughly gender competent and gender equality-oriented way.
  • Staff will be able to contribute their own gender competence to cooperative projects such as projects requiring liaison.
